About Us

The founders of Clean Air Southampton are Liz Batten and Colin MacQueen. Recently Mandi Bissett joined the team.

We campaign for clean air in various ways:

  • Promoting sustainable transport: Liz and Colin organised a trip to the Netherlands so that Southampton councillors could experience Dutch cycling culture. A short film of the trip was produced by local film maker Paul Maple of Global Documentary
  • Media work: Interviews on t.v., radio and newspapers in relation to air quality issues in Southampton and the UK as a whole
  • Policy work: Providing well-researched and considered responses to public consultations in the areas of air quality and sustainable transport
  • Workshops: Attendance at local, regional and nationally recognised conferences on air pollution; giving presentations or informal talks to community groups
  • Community stakeholder: Representing community interests in Southampton City Council’s Clean Air Network, the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Resilience Forum and University of Southampton workshops
  • Public engagement: Helping to organise events such as National Clean Air Day
  • Awareness raising: Touring the city in a ‘smogmobile’ which carried out real-time monitoring of air pollution levels
  • Fundraising: To support the work of campaign members, the Netherlands film making trip, conference attendance, and to assist other local groups working on air quality
  • Networking: Building a network of clean air and sustainable transport organisations across the city and the region, as well as making connections with similar organisations nationwide
  • Data collection: Placing diffusion tubes around the city to monitor NO2 levels, reporting on air quality levels from a personal air quality monitor and supporting the development of low-cost air pollution sensors
  • Social media: Raising awareness of air pollution issues, including air alerts, via Twitter and Facebook
